Licorice (2026)

A feral tabby cat is finally adopted by a loving family at 5 Manderley Road, only to realize that her new home might be haunted by the cat who lived in the house before her. Spine-chilling and heartwarming, funny and charming, Licorice is a purrfect retelling of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca for young readers, by award winning author Kara LaReau.

Licorice has been released to universal acclaim, featuring in a New York Times article and receiving four starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, Booklist, and BookPage.

Starred Review from Publishers Weekly: "Realistic shaded pencil artwork amplifies moments of unease, longing, and tension throughout this grounded story of a cat’s search for belonging. A satisfying emotional arc and hopeful resolution make this an appealing tale for animal lovers and mystery readers alike."

Starred Review from Kirkus: "Distinct animal characters, relatable themes of self-esteem and found family, and Murphy’s appealing, shade-filled drawings peppered throughout add to the appeal. A purrfectly fresh and fun take on a beloved classic: bewitching, mysterious, and thoroughly engrossing."

Starred Review from Booklist: "It’s a modern gothic that is oh so satisfying, and it will leave readers as contented as a cat."

Starred Review from BookPage: "Award-winning illustrator Kelly Murphy’s intricate, expressive coal-hued illustrations artfully convey the physical and emotional landscape of Kitty’s life and amp up Licorice’s compelling, page-turning fun. It’s catnip for fans of psychological suspense, tales tinged with the macabre and fresh takes on enduring classics."
